5 DIY Wedding Ideas and Supplies: Hollywood Theme

As little kids, we’ve all imagined what our wedding would be like. Our vivid imaginations would take us from the ceremony, the gowns, the church, the decorations, right down to the food. So when the time comes some 20 or so years later for our fantasy to actually become reality, it’s a little difficult to turn over the reigns to someone else and trust that they’ll execute your wedding right down the exact way you want it to.

My good friend Kelly and her groom Ross. March 2015. Kelly only hired a wedding coordinator for the day itself to facilitate and did everything else on her own.

Enter the DIY Wedding, where you can plan your  wedding right down to the last detail, from ideas, costing, shopping, designing, etc. It’s not all about control, though–others simply want to create a more organic and personalized feel on their special day, while some attempt this as a way to save money*. Usually, it’s some combination of all three.

*Like all DIY projects, it’s best to check costs of  ready-made items (in this case, wedding services and/or suppliers) vs. DIY supplies including the cost of your time and effort.

Creating and making is fun but it takes a lot of time and effort, too!

A month ago, I received an email asking if I knew where to find specific items for a DIY wedding. I decided to curate this post based on 2 items from Joy’s list because hey, before I became a mind over heart/cynical person, I was a hopeless romantic. And also, I love Pinterest.

1. ADMIT ONE INVITES / SAVE THE DATES
PEG:

What I love about this is that you can customize it to your heart’s content. You can use Photoshop, lettering, and/or calligraphy for your wedding details. Remember to pick paper with thick GSM or stick to card stock for your invites!

2. CINEMA SIGN / LIGHTBOX
Give your wedding a cinematic feel with a light board. After all, it’s a show that’s exclusively one night only!

WHERE TO GET IN MANILA:

Typo! Lightboxes come in different sizes. You can also buy letters separately.

Watch out for their seasonal sales to get more bang for your buck–the TriNoma store held a 40% off store-wide sale last weekend.

Bigger light boxes are available (made-to-order) at signage shops.

ALTERNATIVE:

This is less flashy and it certainly won’t light up, but it’s a great way to hold longer announcements or messages.

3. 3D MARQUEE LETTERS

Amp up the star-studded feel with life-size 3D marquee letters.

Here’s the DIY Tutorial for those exact marquee letters, penned by the bride herself (Mandi Gubler of Vintage Revivals).

Bonus:

Typo has some shapes with lights on them, like this star here:

Alternatively, you can try your luck with purchasing ready-made  wood or steel letters and customizing them with bulbs:

Or you can check out steel suppliers in the metro.

4. CENTERPIECE

Dazzle with guests with a centerpiece that’s so glam  to look at yet so easy to make.

You can click-through the image for the full tutorial (note: this uses adhesive spray, which means the glitter will be outside the bottle) or check my DIY 3-Step Glitter Mason Jar tutorial (which uses Mod Podge, which means the glitter will be inside the bottles).

5. CHOCOLATE BARS

Leave your guests with a 20’s Glam Hollywood feel with gold and black chocolate wrapped bars as giveaways.

WHERE TO GET IN MANILA:

I saw this stall while browsing the dessert market in SM The Block and was amused by the products so I took a quick ninja pic in case I needed it for future use. Little did I know it would be for this post!

Unit16sweets creates chocolates with customized wrappers for all occasions. Candy bar sizes and prices are up on the site.

You can shoot them an e-mail and ask if they accept personal designs.

And that’s it! Hope you got inspired or at least got some useful links out of this post. 🙂

  1. Wow. You’re quite the DIY Queen, if that’s not an understatement! 🙂 I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading this post, keep ’em coming, Jer! ❤

PS: Didn't know Kelly's wedding was injected with some DIY genius hehe. Always loved DIY and find it absolutely hardworking for brides to do. Wonderful
